Actress Azeezat Shorunmu Shares How She Permanently Lost Her Voice on a Movie Set

Popular Nollywood actress and producer Azeezat Shorunmu has opened up about the heartbreaking incident that led to the permanent damage of her vocal cords, altering her voice forever.

In a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, the actress shared that the transformation in her voice, which fans now recognize as her unique raspy tone, happened during a tragic moment on a movie set.

Azeezat explained that filming was about to commence when she received devastating news that fellow actress Surutu had lost her child. The emotional shock overwhelmed her, and she let out a loud scream, unaware of the lasting impact it would have.

According to her, the intense scream caused significant strain on her vocal cords, and from that point on, her voice began to deteriorate.

The actress revealed that she explored several avenues, including medical treatments and spiritual interventions, in a desperate bid to restore her original voice. Despite these efforts, her voice never returned to its former state.

Eventually, when her ability to speak came back, Azeezat found herself with a permanently raspy tone, which she has now embraced as part of her identity.

She said;

“Everyone knows that this is not my real voice.

“It happens while shooting the movie ‘Apase’. Mummy Surutu lost her child that very morning we were to commence shooting.

“And she has been paid already. I was confused and didn’t know what to do upon hearing the news. It was when I was shouting that I lost my voice.

“My voice was blocked throughout the production. Normally, a blocked throat lasts for a short period.

“But mine did not open, it became worse after four months. That was when I realised that it was a painful thing to be dumb. It hurts when you want to express yourself, but you cannot.

“I used various things, including anointing oil. By the time the vocal cord was through, it didn’t come out as my voice again. It became this tiny and cracked voice”, stated.
