Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has shared his thoughts on American streamer IShowSpeed’s current African tour.
Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, recently concluded his visit to Lagos before continuing to Ghana. His stop in Nigeria created a wave of viral moments, some amusing and others chaotic.
On Instagram, Remi commented on Speed’s travels across Africa, noting that Lagos, in particular, did not make a positive impression. He argued that the city failed to showcase Nigeria’s authentic culture.
He stated:
“After watching IShowSpeed’s journey so far, Nigeria ranks lowest for me. Lagos really exposed itself… not that there’s much beneath the surface. It feels like we’ve lost our cultural essence. The reality is, all we have are fake drinks and begging skills.”
The actor’s remarks sparked discussions about Lagos’ changing identity, especially in the context of social media, celebrity influence, and increasing poverty.
Many Nigerians echoed Remi’s view, suggesting that visitors rarely experience the country’s genuine culture. Instead, they encounter entertainers, crowds, and self-styled “superstars” often seeking attention, gifts, or viral moments.
Meanwhile, IShowSpeed addressed criticism over not collaborating with local creators. He explained that his African tour was intended to highlight authentic street life, talent, and culture rather than online collaborations or skits. According to him, each country on the itinerary had a carefully planned schedule, leaving little room for spontaneous activities.
