A Nigerian man named Umar has finally been released after spending five months in detention following an attempt to retrieve his stolen phone.
In February 2025, while taking a walk in the Mabushi area of Abuja, Umar was attacked and his phone snatched. He attempted to report the theft at a nearby police station but was denied access.
Several days later, Umar spotted the alleged thief and confronted him. The situation quickly escalated, leading to a physical altercation. During the scuffle, the suspect reportedly called in thugs who assaulted Umar before summoning the police. Rather than arresting the attackers, the police detained Umar without proper investigation.
After several days in custody, he was charged in court. However, the legal process was marred by delays as the prosecution failed to show up repeatedly. A legal team eventually took up Umar’s case and appeared in court on July 2, 2025, requesting that the case be struck out due to lack of prosecution. The court agreed and Umar was freed.
One of the lawyers said: “Umar’s case exposes yet another recurring flaw in the Nigerian justice system where vulnerable Nigerians are denied access to the very system meant to protect them. That such a case even made it to court without due investigation is troubling.”
