Former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff has accused Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of pursuing the division of Nigeria through what he described as Obi’s belief in the Biafra movement.
Sheriff made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television while reacting to Obi’s recent call for President Bola Tinubu to resign over the country’s worsening security and economic situation.
According to the former governor, Obi has consistently failed to distance himself from the Biafra movement.
“Peter Obi, up to this moment, is pursuing the division of Nigeria because he believes in Biafra.”
Sheriff further alleged that the former Anambra State governor has never publicly condemned Biafra or the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
He argued that Obi should clearly state whether he supports Nigeria’s unity or not.
According to Sheriff, anyone seeking to become Nigeria’s president must demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the country’s unity rather than any regional or sectional interest.
“Anybody aspiring to lead Nigeria must be someone who stands for Nigeria, not for any section.”
Sheriff’s comments come amid increasing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures and members of the ruling party continuing to trade criticisms over governance, national security and the country’s future.
