  • Filmmakers frequently cast her as “side chick” characters based on her looks and body type.

Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has spoken about the challenges she faced early in her career, revealing how she was often boxed into specific character types because of her physical appearance.

In an interview with content creator Joseph Onaolapo, popularly known as Jay On-Air, Ogunmola said some filmmakers attempted to restrict her to “side chick” roles due to her looks and body type.

According to her, the industry’s preference at the time also influenced the kinds of roles she was offered. She explained that being dark-skinned and curvy made her feel stereotyped in an era when light-skinned actresses were more frequently favoured. Despite this, she said she remained persistent and focused on her craft.

The actress also praised filmmaker Biodun Stephen for playing a key mentorship role in her career development, noting that she learned a lot by observing her on set.

She said, “Before you lead, serve. A lot of the things I learnt were from other producers. Biodun Stephen was my first teacher when it comes to movie production. Every time I am on set, I am watching her.”

Ogunmola further shared that she ventured into business early, explaining that she had little interest in traditional office jobs and preferred entrepreneurship.

She added that she wanted a meaningful and active lifestyle rather than a conventional 9–5 routine, while acknowledging those who choose that path.

Emphasising financial discipline, she advised creatives to think long-term and prepare for life beyond fame, noting that the entertainment industry is unpredictable.

“In life, seasons change. You may be popular today and less visible tomorrow. It’s important to plan ahead, invest wisely, and have something else you’re doing,” she said.
