Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has sparked fresh political debate after declaring that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is “dead,” following a wave of defections in the Senate.
Akpabio made the remark while announcing the defection letter of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District, as he officially moved from the ADC to the Labour Party.
“I think ADC party is de@d. Please, they should compile every resignation letter from ADC so that it will be easy to announce,” Akpabio said during plenary.
In a related development, Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, also announced his defection from the ADC to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His letter was similarly read on the Senate floor by the Senate President.
The developments signal growing instability within the ADC, as more lawmakers continue to exit the party for other political platforms.
Meanwhile, reactions have trailed Akpabio’s comments on social media, with Nigerians expressing mixed opinions. While some agreed with his assessment of the party’s current state, others criticized his statement and leadership.
One user wrote, “For once, I agree with the Senate President, Mrs. Natasha, sorry, Godswill Akpabio.”
Another reacted, “Compile every resignation letter indeed! Better compile the loot wey una chop make una return am to treasury sharp sharp.”
A third user added, “Yati yati by the most us£less Senate president in the history of Nigeria.”
