Popular Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, widely known as Mr P, has reacted strongly to criticism trailing his decision to shift his birthday celebration from November 18 to November 30.

The former member of the defunct music duo P-Square had earlier announced that he would no longer celebrate or accept gifts on his original birth date, stressing that the move was a personal decision.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the singer expressed surprise at the level of backlash the announcement generated, questioning why many Nigerians were offended by a private choice.

“Una dey vex like say I cancel Christmas? Na my birthday date I move… no be your own, why e dey pain you? Even Jesus Christ December 25th date sef, people still dey debate am,” he wrote.

Mr P also criticised what he described as misplaced priorities, noting that the reaction to his birthday decision appeared excessive compared to more pressing national concerns.

“Why cry more than the bereaved? Only in Nigeria, funny how my birthday date shift is causing more pain than Nigeria’s real problems,” he added.

He concluded with a firm message to his critics, insisting that insults would not affect his success.

“Just for the record: Insult no dey reduce success. Who don make am, don make am! Know that and know peace,” he stated.

Peter Okoye rose to fame alongside his twin brother, Paul Okoye, as part of P-Square, one of Nigeria’s most successful music duos. Despite past splits and reunions, both artistes have continued to maintain individual careers in the music industry.
