Elders of Ogbesomwan community in Edo State have taken a dramatic step in the fight against drug abuse, publicly invoking curses on individuals involved in the sale of COLOS and other harmful substances.
The traditional leaders gathered on Monday near Benin City to perform a ritual aimed at condemning and deterring those dealing in the dangerous drug, which has reportedly caused rising cases of addiction and mental health issues among youths in the area.
COLOS, described as a cheap synthetic substance, has been linked to severe effects including hallucinations, violent behaviour, and psychosis, raising alarm within the community.
Speaking during the gathering, the elders expressed frustration over the growing menace and what they perceive as insufficient intervention from authorities.
The development comes amid broader concerns about drug abuse in Nigeria, where statistics indicate a significant prevalence rate among people aged 15 to 64. Despite efforts by agencies like the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to clamp down on illegal drug operations, many communities say the problem persists.
