Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed confidence in gaining strong support from Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, outlining plans to transform the region through agriculture and economic reforms.
Speaking during an interview on Prime Time on Arise Television, Obi described the North as Nigeria’s most valuable asset, emphasizing its vast potential, particularly in agriculture.
“Nobody can do what I intend to do in the North. We will change the North. Our greatest asset as a country is in the North. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that his vision is centered on shifting Nigeria’s economy from consumption to production, with a focus on wealth creation rather than distribution.
“I’ve said it before. Do not vote for me because I’m from the South East or Christian. Vote for me because I’m committed to turning around Nigeria and I’ll start from the North, because I know where the problem is. I’ll move the country from consumption to production. From sharing the wealth to creating the wealth,” he stated.
Obi also highlighted the importance of equal opportunity, noting that a functional system should allow individuals to succeed based on merit and hard work.
“You build a society where people’s talent and hardwork will match up the opportunities. Where a child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody,” he added.
Drawing a comparison with England, he pointed out that merit-based systems enable individuals to thrive regardless of background.
“That’s how it is in England. Nobody knew your father when they gave you a job,” he said.
In addition, Obi called for stronger democratic institutions, urging the government to support and protect opposition parties to ensure accountability.
“The government should protect the opposition. In fact, they should make opposition stronger and make it work,” he added.
