Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on Nigerians to take collective responsibility for the country’s development, warning that meaningful progress will remain elusive without unity and accountability.
Obasanjo made the remarks on Thursday during the Sixth Annual Colloquium held to mark the 65th birthday of Itua Ighodalo, where discussions focused on “The Future of Nigeria.”
Speaking through Prof. Adedeji Daramola on behalf of the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute, the former president emphasized that nation-building is a shared duty that involves every segment of society.
“Nobody will fix Nigeria for us until we come together to work and fix it,” Obasanjo said.
He cautioned Nigerians against expecting instant solutions to the country’s challenges, stressing that sustainable development requires deliberate efforts from citizens across all sectors, including traders, professionals, and political leaders.
Obasanjo also highlighted the critical role of young people in shaping Nigeria’s future, describing them as a key asset that must be fully engaged in governance and development processes.
According to him, Nigeria’s large youth population presents an opportunity that can be maximized through innovation and technology.
He further urged stakeholders to embrace advancements such as artificial intelligence as tools for empowering young Nigerians and driving long-term national growth.
