Nigerian singer Tems recently opened up about her perspectives on love and marriage, offering fans a rare look into her personal philosophy.
In an interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the award-winning artist discussed relationships, commitment, and the factors that truly sustain a lasting marriage.
Tems believes that while love is important, it alone cannot form the foundation of a successful marriage. She stressed that true marital strength comes from growth, compatibility, and shared purpose.
“Marriage is something that makes you a better person. That’s how it should be,” she explained.
She added that compatibility and personal development matter more than emotions alone. “It’s not just about love; it’s about whether the relationship helps you become a better human being,” Tems noted.
The singer also highlighted that many people underestimate the challenges of marriage. Unlike idealized expectations, she pointed out that relationships inevitably face tough moments that test both partners.
“Marriage operates on a whole different level… it’s meant to bring out the hard times,” she said, framing marriage as a journey requiring resilience as well as romance.
Tems further emphasized the importance of accountability in a partner, linking it to faith. “My partner has to be a God-fearing man,” she stated.
She explained that without a sense of accountability, it is difficult to maintain true commitment. “If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just walk away anytime,” she added.
