Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has said he has no plans of passing away anytime soon, dismissing rumours about his death.
Obasanjo made the statement on Wednesday in Abeokuta while delivering a colloquium titled “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World.” The event was part of activities marking his 89th birthday.
The former president condemned those spreading a fake letter claiming he had written about his own death. According to him, the document being circulated online is false and does not reflect his wishes.
Obasanjo said he believes God has kept him alive and healthy for a reason and that he still has more work to do.
“I dey kampe as usual,” he said, adding that those wishing him dead are wasting their time.
During the event, Obasanjo also spoke about leadership challenges in Africa. He said the continent’s major problem is leadership failure rather than geography or history.
The former president noted that Africa has the resources and potential to prosper but has been held back by leaders who fail to serve the people and build strong institutions.
Obasanjo also encouraged young Africans to take democracy seriously and work toward building accountable and transparent leadership systems.
