A Nigerian lady has sparked debate on social media after recounting a personal experience that shaped her views on loyalty, gratitude, and why she says she prefers investing more in men than women.
The lady, who shared her story on X, explained how a forgotten debt eventually reminded her of an earlier act of kindness and made her reflect on trust.
According to her, she had borrowed money from a male friend last year during a difficult financial period. At the time, she promised to repay the loan within three months, and when the deadline arrived, she returned nearly the entire amount.
However, she admitted that a small portion of the money remained unpaid, which she unintentionally forgot about because it was insignificant compared to the total amount she had borrowed.
Despite occasionally chatting and viewing each other’s status updates on WhatsApp, the friend never brought up the unpaid balance.
As time went on, both of them became busy with their personal lives and gradually lost regular contact.
The woman said the issue resurfaced recently when she came across a business opportunity that she felt her friend would be well suited for. Wanting to refer the job to him, she decided to send him a message.
But instead of opening their regular chat, she mistakenly clicked on his business WhatsApp account. When the conversation opened, the last message she saw was the receipt of a payment she had previously sent him.
Seeing the receipt immediately reminded her that she still owed him a small amount from the loan.
Realising this, she quickly copied his bank details and transferred the outstanding balance without delay. She also added some extra money as a gesture of appreciation and an apology for the long delay.
After completing the transfer, she sent him a message explaining that she had forgotten about the balance and apologised.
To her surprise, the man responded happily and thanked her for the payment.
According to her, he said he had completely forgotten about the remaining amount as well. He then revealed that years earlier, when he urgently needed money to support his business, she was the only person who helped him.
He explained that during that challenging time, she had lent him money when no one else was willing to assist. Because of that act of kindness, he said he had already decided to overlook the remaining balance and intended to tell her not to worry about it.
Reflecting on the experience, the woman concluded that the incident reinforced her belief in investing more in men than women.
“Not to devalue my gender but I chose to invest more in men than women,” she wrote.
Her statement has since generated mixed reactions online, with many social media users debating whether qualities like loyalty and gratitude should be associated with gender.
