Tear Gas Fired as Nasir El-Rufai Supporters and Protesters Storm EFCC Headquarters in Abuja

  • Protests erupted at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja as supporters of Nasir El-Rufai clashed with security operatives.
  • Tear gas was used to disperse the crowd, who vowed to return.
  • The incident follows reports of an attempted arrest of the former Kaduna governor at Abuja’s international airport last week.

Tensions escalated on Monday at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja as protesters believed to be loyal to former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai clashed with security personnel.

According to eyewitness accounts, the situation became heated when a large crowd gathered outside the anti-graft agency’s office, reportedly protesting what they described as attempts to arrest the former governor. Security operatives were said to have fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators after tensions rose and the crowd refused to vacate the premises.

In a video seen by reporters, several protesters could be heard chanting defiantly, vowing to return after the tear gas cleared. Voices in the footage repeatedly declared, “We will come back; when it clears, we will come back,” signaling their determination to continue the protest.

The development follows earlier reports that El-Rufai had arrived at the EFCC headquarters accompanied by hundreds of supporters. This came days after claims that he was nearly arrested last Thursday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
