Man Arrested After Trying to Hide Under Aircraft He Thought Was Heading to the U.S.

  • A man identified as Segun Martins was arrested on Wednesday, December 10, at the General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin after attempting to stow away beneath an Overland Airways aircraft preparing for takeoff.
  • Martins reportedly gained unauthorized access and tried to hide between the aircraft’s tyres, believing the plane was headed to the United States. Airport security apprehended him before takeoff, and he has since been handed over to the Airport Police.

A suspected stowaway identified as Segun Martins was arrested on Wednesday, December 10, at the General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin after attempting to hide beneath an Overland aircraft preparing for takeoff.

The incident occurred at about 3:02 p.m. when Martins reportedly gained unauthorized access to the foot of the aircraft and tried to conceal himself between the tyres.

According to preliminary reports, Martins told investigators he believed the aircraft was headed for the United States and attempted to escape the country by hiding underneath it.

Spokesperson of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, confirmed the development, stating:

“At approximately 1502 hours, a male, identified as Segun Martins, gained unauthorized access to the foot of an Overland aircraft that was about taxi for takeoff and attempted to conceal himself between the aircraft tyres… Mr. Segun Martins stated that he believed the aircraft was bound for the United States of America and intended to escape by hiding on the aircraft.”

Martins was immediately apprehended by ground security and handed over to the Airport Police. A full investigation into the security breach is currently underway.
