Senator Okey Ezea of Enugu North Senatorial District has passed away in the United Kingdom, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

His death has plunged Enugu State into mourning, as he was the last remaining Labour Party (LP) representative from the state in the National Assembly.

A respected figure in the Nsukka region, the late senator won his seat on the LP ticket during the 2023 general elections.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Tuesday by popular media personality Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, who shared the information on Facebook. Ugwuanyi wrote: “Sad News. Senator Okey Ezea, representing Enugu North, is dead… Rest in Peace.”

The announcement sparked widespread reactions online, with many expressing shock and grief over his sudden death.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu led the tributes, describing Ezea as not only a colleague but also a close friend. Kalu said he received the news “with profound shock and deep sorrow,” noting that their bond extended beyond the Senate chamber.

He highlighted the spiritual connection they shared through their Catholic faith, writing, “Those quiet moments of prayer and spiritual communion remain etched in my heart.”

Kalu also emphasized that the Senate had lost “a principled voice” and extended his condolences to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

He further expressed sympathy to Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and the people of Enugu, particularly the Nsukka community, while commending the late senator’s dedication to public service and his commitment to improving the lives of his constituents.

Kalu concluded by praying for the family, describing Senator Ezea as “a noble man whose legacy of service and faith will continue to shine.”
