Tensions flared in Lagos when men believed to be from the Lagos State Taskforce allegedly tried to intimidate an Igbo trader without presenting any official identification.
Witnesses said the operatives arrived with no badges or ID cards, raising doubts about whether they were genuine law-enforcement officers or simply hoodlums in uniform.
Reports indicate that the officers attempted to assert authority but met firm resistance. Supported by onlookers, the businessman refused to yield, and the situation quickly turned into a heated confrontation.
In a dramatic turn, the supposed taskforce members were said to have been overpowered and roughed up. Bystanders described the scene as ironic payback, calling it an embarrassment for personnel meant to uphold the law.
The incident has ignited public criticism, with many alleging that Igbo-owned businesses in Lagos are frequently singled out for harassment. Commentators argue that such behaviour looks less like law enforcement and more like intimidation and extortion.
Analysts warn that these actions erode confidence in security agencies. Instead of reinforcing respect, government officials risk public ridicule when they act like street enforcers.
The businessman reportedly maintained his stance until the officers, battered and humiliated, left the scene.
