A Nigerian man, Ibrahim Kazeem, has shared his unusual experience after choosing to wear an Ankara outfit to a banking test in a bid to stand out from other candidates.
According to Kazeem, his appearance left the interview panel uncertain about how to handle him. He revealed that he was kept aside and his session was delayed, as officials appeared to debate whether to let him participate or dismiss him outright.
“I was allowed to do the interview but I didn’t even get a response,” he recounted, adding that the Egbon who had recommended him for the role had to wait three years before securing his own opportunity.
Despite the setback, Kazeem remains optimistic, saying the experience fueled his determination to pursue a career in banking. “Good thing is it attracted me to banking jobs and I will still do it,” he stated.
The post quickly went viral, sparking mixed reactions online. Some found humor in his bold choice, jokingly likening his attire to that of traditional leaders, while others praised his confidence and individuality.
One user quipped, “As per Ooni of Ife?” while another wrote, “Don’t worry, when I create my own bank only Ankara will be allowed… no corporate.”
The story has since ignited a debate about the balance between professionalism and personal identity in Nigeria’s corporate culture.
