For most people, being the child of the world’s richest man might suggest a life of endless luxury. For Vivian Wilson, the 21-year-old estranged daughter of Tesla founder Elon Musk, the reality has been very different.
In a recent interview with The Cut, Vivian opened up about her life after cutting ties with her father.
She admitted that many assume she has wealth because of her father’s fortune, but that’s not the case.
“People assume I have a lot of money. I don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars at my disposal,” she said.
Currently, she shares an apartment with three roommates, a more affordable way to live in Los Angeles.
“I can afford food. I have friends, a shelter, and some expendable income, which is nice and much more fortunate than most people my age in Los Angeles,” she added.
Vivian officially ended her relationship with Musk in 2022 when she filed a petition to change her gender and name. Since then, their connection has been openly strained.
She has criticized her father publicly, once calling him a “pathetic man-child” who could not accept her gender identity. Musk, on the other hand, has said his daughter was “k!lled by the woke mind virus” and claimed he was “tricked” into letting her transition at 16.
Despite her current situation, Vivian acknowledged her privileged upbringing. She attended a private high school with celebrity kids, including Apple Martin, the daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin.
She also studied multiple languages Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish and attended colleges in Canada and Japan before dropping out. Her reason? She said Artificial Intelligence (AI) ruined her motivation.
Now an aspiring model, Vivian has an agent and has appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue. Yet, she admitted that being in the spotlight is not always easy.
“I fought so hard for so long to be viewed as a regular person… there was a moment right before I became famous where no one knew who I was. I miss that,” she said.
Still, she acknowledged the benefits fame brings: “I like the fact that it makes me money.”
