Media personality Toke Makinwa has revisited her past marriage, opening up on how she managed public judgment and the misconceptions that followed her decision to leave.

Speaking in an interview with Chude Jideonwo, the actress and entrepreneur reflected on the difficulty of living through a very public relationship while dealing with personal struggles that few truly understood.

“People often underestimate survivors, thinking their pain wasn’t real just because they survived and kept going,” she said. “Instead of drawing inspiration from someone’s recovery, society sometimes resents those who heal completely.”

She further stated, “People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back stronger, it unsettles others. Until you have walked in my shoes, don’t comment on it.”

Toke explained that the heavy public attention played a big role in her decision to leave, admitting that she might have stayed longer if the marriage had remained private.

“The emotional intensity and constant scrutiny made the situation dangerous for my health. Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public. But the way I loved this person would have consumed my entire life,” she said.

Although it was painful, she stressed that choosing herself over a toxic environment was the only way to safeguard her future and protect her life.
