Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has announced that she will no longer represent Nigeria in international athletics, revealing that she has switched allegiance to Turkey.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Ofili described 2025 as a year of “new experiences and big decisions,” explaining that while she remains proud of her time representing Nigeria, the move was necessary for her career.
“Having won six gold medals, two silver medals, two bronze medals in championship meets, and as a 200-meter Olympic finalist, I experienced the biggest disappointment from AFN and NOC for their negligence towards me in two Olympic (Tokyo/Paris). I have made this decision… not from financial motives. I’m truly grateful to have discovered a new home in Turkey,” she wrote.
Ofili, who has been one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects on the track, expressed gratitude to her coaches, sponsors, and loved ones for their support. She added that she is eager to embrace her new chapter as a Turkish athlete, tagging the transition as a pursuit of “peace of mind and fresh beginnings.”
Her decision comes amid growing concerns about Nigeria’s handling of athletes, especially during major competitions.
