Controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, is facing intense backlash following a disturbing statement on social media regarding his intention to marry a virgin aged between 15 and 23 years.
The singer, notorious for his provocative and often offensive social media antics, made the comments on his Instagram page, asking:
“Who wants to marry me ladies?”
He wrote: “Who wants to marry me ladies? you already know if you are loyal and faithful to me it’s you that will be tired of bags because if I can give myself many handbag and I’m not even a female, you know I’m gonna flood you with handbags. looking for a wife between 15 and 23 years old virgin.”
Speed Darlington’s post comes in the wake of a previous scandal involving allegations of inappropriate conduct with a minor, which reportedly led to an invitation by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
Many Nigerians have taken to social media to condemn his comments, calling for swift action by authorities. Legal experts and child rights advocates emphasize that marrying or soliciting marriage with a minor is a criminal offense under Nigeria’s Child Rights Act, which prohibits the marriage of anyone under 18.
As of the time of this report, NAPTIP has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the singer’s latest comments.
