Nigerian writer and social commentator, Solomon Buchi, has weighed in on the public reaction following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, asserting that Nigerians have the right to mourn or not mourn him however they choose.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page, Buchi addressed those condemning people who expressed joy over Buhari’s passing, stating that the late president’s leadership left many citizens in deep suffering.

’I know we all want to get preachy, but you cannot ask people who were negatively impacted by Buhari’s presidency not to rejoice over his death. Real lives were lost, real people suffered and real families endured extreme suffering. Buhari’s life isn’t more important than all the lives wasted as a result of his clueless government. You can’t force legacy how you live determines how people feel when you pass away. It’s not wickedness; it’s consequence.”

His statement has stirred discussions online, with many Nigerians agreeing that leaders should be held accountable, even in death, for the impact of their policies and actions.

In other news, An old video of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari discussing the importance of forgiveness has resurfaced online, touching the hearts of many Nigerians.

Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82 on Sunday, July 13th, in a London clinic, left behind a wave of national mourning.

In the wake of his passing, his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, shared a throwback clip from May 2023 in which the former president reflected on his time in office and the need for forgiveness.

In the video, Buhari openly admitted that some of his decisions may have caused pain to certain individuals. He went on to express his desire to be forgiven by those affected.
